GILA CLIFF DWELLINGS
Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located in the Gila Wilderness within the Gila National Forest. The Elevations ranges from 5,700 to about 6,000 feet at the Cliff Dwellings. The terrain is rugged and the cliffs are steep, I can't imagine trying to raise children in this area, My suspicion is this is why the Mogollon people actually left the area, of course this is not what they will tell you at the Monument. Last time I was there it was unknown why they left. The only stayed there for about 25 years, probably after losing a few children they left, Ha! I belileve these Mogollon people lived here between 1275 and 1300 AD. Primitive living quarters If I do say so myself. People in England are still living in homes built around 900 - 1000 AD! The Monument occupies a little over 550 acres and it is about a 1/2 mile easy hike uphill to the dwellings from the Ranger station and parking areas. Of course the 1/2 mile back is way easier hiking! It is a beautiful hike along the creek and mostly in the shade with benches and stopping areas along the way. The hike begins at an elevation of 5695 Feet and ends at 5875 Feet. There have been 46 Rooms identified within in the five caves and it is believed that they were occupied by about ten to fifteen famillies.
